In December 2024, Meta announced an update to its desktop Messenger app for Windows and MacOS. As a result of this change, several useful features that users appreciated and relied on were removed. Moreover, Meta has officially announced that the desktop Messenger application will be completely discontinued after December 15, 2025. After that date, users will be forced to access Messenger exclusively through the web version in their browser.
In response to these shortcomings, Messenger Plus was created.
Messenger Plus aims to restore and enhance the missing functionalities, such as:
Messenger Plus is a completely free and simple application based on WebView technology. This means that Messenger Plus is not a separate messenger or a replacement for Messenger. It is simply a small browser window that displays the official website messenger.com. Everything works exactly the same as in a regular web browser — the application does not modify Messenger, does not interfere with its operation, and does not affect Meta’s security mechanisms. As a result, users can continue to use Messenger in a convenient way without having to manually open the website in a browser every time, which will be required by Meta after the official application is withdrawn.
The Messenger Plus application may be freely distributed, both in its original form and by sharing download links on websites, technology portals, blogs, and social media. Any editorial team or private individual has full rights to publish information about the program, include it in software catalogs, and describe its features without the need to obtain individual permission from the author.
